Aadhaar now gets auto update key for DigiLocker documents

Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) is coordinating with respective government departments to effect changes in papers stored in DigiLocker after an update is made in the user’s Aadhaar.

The UIDAI and the Union Road Transport and Highways Ministry have already started

this initiative, allowing those with their driving licence in the DigiLocker to get the address updated once they update their Aadhaar address.

Now, the UIDAI and various government departments are looking to exercise a similar initiative to help people update their DigiLocker papers, including PAN, once a user makes changes in Aadhaar.

The UIDAI, the Aadhaar issuing agency, is working together with the Income Tax Department to eliminate the technical issues around this initiative, according to a TOI report.

As of now, one can keep multiple documents on the DigiLocker, including vehicle registration certificates (RCs), PAN, insurance papers, educational certificates, etc.

At present, if a person changes his or her address in Aadhaar, it does not help him much as the DigiLocker user has to update this address separately in other documents, issued by various ministries, agencies or private players.

For Example, updating an address in the driving licence itself required a visit to the transport office after filling up the form online through a centralised portal. But now with the UIDAI and the Transport Ministry formulating a mechanism, the Aadhaar changes will automatically be effected in driving licences, the report suggests.

The move is meant to help citizens in ease of living and do away with the requirement to visit multiple offices to update address.

The TOI reported, citing an official, "We have been working on this for several months as part of our efforts to use Aadhaar for ease of living. The government is looking at how Aadhaar can simplify the interface with government departments and public utilities."

However, the use of Aadhaar is allowed only for a limited purposes, thus it will remain voluntary for most services and require a subscriber's consent to effect changes on DigiLocker papers.
