After filing the income tax return, the next step is to verify your ITR. Once it is verified, the tax department starts processing the return and under section 143(1), sends the taxpayer an intimation notice. While the tax department processes your return,

The last date to file the income tax return for the financial year 2018- 19 was August 31, 2019. This intimation notice tells if the income computation mentioned by you in your ITR is matching with that of the tax department. It may be noted that the income tax department takes at least one month to process the ITR from the date of filing the return. As per the current income tax laws, the time limit to process the ITR is one year from the end of the financial year in which income tax return was filed. After the tax department processes your return, the department sends an intimation notice.
Once your ITR is filed and verified, the status of your return will be shown as 'Return Submitted and Verified'. It may, however, be noted that in case if your ITR is not processed by the department even after a long period of time, you can raise a grievance of the same.
Here's a step-wise process to raise the grievance
Visit income tax website
Go to income tax website- www.incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in and log in to your account.
Click on 'e-Nivaran' tab
On the income tax efiling website page, go to 'e-nivaran' tab. Now under this, select 'Submit Grievance' option. You must cross check your details which are auto-filled.
Fill the grievance details
a) Resolution Sought From- Centralised Processing Center for Income Tax Returns (CPC-ITR)
b) Grievance Category- Processing
c) Grievance Sub-category- Others - processing
d) Assessment year- 2019-20 for ITR filed for FY 2018-19. It may be noted, if the return is not processed for the financial year 2018, then you will select assessment year 2018-19.
In the description box, you have to write the details of your grievances. You can even upload the supporting documents related to your grievances. Only PDF can be uploaded of not more than 5MB in size.
Click on preview
Now, in the next step, click on the preview and submit tab. On the new webpage opened, cross check all the deatils of ypur grievances before clicking on the submit tab. After submitting, your grievance ID will be displayed on the screen. An intimation will be sent on your registered email ID. A link will be shown to download your grievance.
