Income Tax returns FY19 due date extended till Aug 31

In a major relief to the taxpayers willing to file the income tax returns for the financial year (FY) 2018-19, the government on Tuesday, July 23, 2019, extended the ITR filing due date by one month till August 31, 2019. The decision to
extend the ITR filing deadline comes just a week before the previous ITR filing due date of July 31, 2019.

Earlier last year also, the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) extended the ITR filing last date by a month to August 31, 2018, for the income tax filers for the financial year 2017-18. This year too, a large section of people is expecting an extension of ITR filing due date. The Income Tax Department and CBDT seemed to have taken a collective decision to extend the ITR filing deadline with the growing number of taxpayers.

"The due date for filing of Income Tax Returns for Assessment Year 2019-20 is 31.07.2019 for certain categories of taxpayers. Upon consideration of the matter, the Central Board of Direct Taxes(CBDT) extends the ‘due date’ for filing of Income Tax Returns from July 31, 2019, to August 31, 2019, in respect of the said categories of taxpayers, the finance ministry said in a statement.

Ministry of Finance tweeted :-

There were demands for an extension in ITR filing due date since the issuance of tax deducted at source (TDS) statement for 2018-19 fiscal was delayed. The Income Tax department last month extended the deadline for employers to issue Form 16 TDS certificate for the financial year 2018-19 to its employees by 25 days till July 10.

With the extension in the ITR filing deadline, all the salaried, as well as, the self-employed income taxpayers got extra time to file the I-T returns accordingly with respect to the applicable income tax slabs and available tax deductions under various section of the Income Tax Act, 1961. All the individual taxpayers, including salaried and entities, should file their income tax returns for the FY 2018-19 and assessment year (AY) 2019-20 by July 31, 2019, if they don't wish to get their accounts scrutinized.
