Permanent Account Number (PAN) is a 10-digit alphanumeric number which acts as an identity proof for an individual. It is mandatory while carrying out major financial transactions. The Income-Tax department tracks all the financial transactions
of an individual in order to ascertain his actual earning with the help of PAN. It can be issued to Indian citizens including minors, foreign citizens and non-resident Indians (NRIs).

It may be noted that as per the new rule which came into effect on December 5, 2018, applicants can choose father or mother's name to be printed on PAN. In case, the applicant's mother is a single parent, then furnishing father's name is not mandatory. If you wish to access your PAN card details online or want to verify your PAN card, follow the given below process-
Step 1: Go to - https://www1.incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in/e-FilingGS/Services/KnowYourJurisdictionLink.html
Step 2: 'Know Your Jurisdictional A.O' page will open. Here enter your PAN and registered mobile number which is linked with your PAN.
Step 3: Click on 'Submit' button.
Step 4: A new page will open. Now the enter the one-time password (OTP) received on your mobile number.
Step 5: 'Jurisdiction Details for the PAN' page will open showing details such as name, Indian citizen, Area Code, AO Type, Range Code, AO Number, Jurisdiction, Building name, email id and the status of the PAN Card.
Following the above steps, you can check the status of your PAN
By using the online PAN verification facility, one can know or verify their Permanent Account Number (PAN). This facility is referred to as 'PAN Verification' or 'Know Your PAN'.
Step 1: Go to- https://www1.incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in/e-FilingGS/Services/VerifyYourPanDeatils.html
Step 2: On the page opened enter details such as PAN, full name, date of birth, select status from the drop-down menu, captcha code.
Step 3: Click 'Submit' button.
Step 4: After this, a new page will open- 'Verify Your PAN'. If the details provided by you are correct, the website will show 'PAN is Active and the details are matching with PAN database' as the message.
It is to be noted that the Income Tax Department (I-T), Government of India has appointed only two entities namely NSDL e-Governance Infrastructure Limited (NSDL e-Gov.) and UTI Infrastructure Technologies Services Limited for purpose of receiving and processing of PAN applications. No other entity has been authorized to undertake this activity on behalf of ITD. NSDL e- Gov receives and processes PAN applications through TIN-Facilitation centers, PAN centers or online requests.
